▍Epidemic prevention - Nipah virus outbreak

Nipah virus symptoms

•Initial symptoms are similar to those of the common cold, including fever, headache, sore muscles, vomiting, and a sore throat

•Later symptoms can include dizziness, lethargy and changes in consciousness

•In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis, or seizures. The symptoms can rapidly worsen within one to two days and even result in a coma

Currently, there is no vaccine or specific remedy for the Nipah virus, making supportive treatment the best approach

Prevention

•When traveling to a Nipah virus endemic area (southern India and Bangladesh), avoid contact with bats and pigs

•If contact with animal is unavoidable be sure to wear protective equipment

•Do not drink unprocessed coconut date juice

•Do not eat fruit from the ground

•Fruit should be properly washed and peeled before consumption

•Avoid direct contact with the blood or bodily secretions of patients

•Maintain good hygiene habits, wash your hands rigorously and disinfect with soap or rubbing alcohol
