The potential dangers of abusing nitrous oxide

In order to prevent juveniles abusing nitrous oxide, the Ministry of Environment announced that the gas will be designated Taiwan’s first “chemical of concern,” while working to strengthen controls through interagency cooperation.

Nitrous oxide is used in semiconductors, medical anesthesia and food whipped foam. However, in recent years law enforcement have repeatedly discovered juveniles inhaling it in nightclubs and hotels as a stimulant, raising concerns about potential harm.

Abuse of nitrous oxide can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, damage the nervous system, cause nausea, hypoxia, cardiac arrhythmia, cerebral edema, permanent visual and brain damage, and may even result in loss of consciousness or be life-threatening.

New system “4 requirements, 2 prohibitions”

In order to better control the distribution of nitrous oxide the Ministry of Environment has proposed:

4 requirements - Approval, labeling, item-by-item online record-keeping and monthly reporting

2 prohibitions - Online transactions and unlicensed operations.

A friendly reminder to foreign workers, do not sacrifice a lifetime of health and freedom out of a moment of curiosity.
