▍What is a hit-and-run accident?

If when driving a car or motorbike you are involved in an accident it is important to not leave the scene.

Regardless of who caused the accident, leaving the scene after someone has been injured or killed could constitute a “hit-and-run crime.”

If a motorist is involved in an accident, he or she should immediately stop, call the police, and assist anyone injured. Fleeing the scene, can result in a criminal sentence and a criminal record.

If a driver is unaware he or she caused an accident or that anyone has been injured, leaving the scene does not constitute hit-and-run.

Be aware : If fleeing the scene results in the victim missing critical time for emergency treatment, leading to serious injury or death, the punishment can be increased and the offender charged with “abandonment causing serious injury” or “abandonment causing negligent homicide” which carry heavier penalties.

If you are involved in an accident remaining at the scene is your legal obligation and the responsible thing to do.
