It is a deadly toxin commonly found in spoiled fermented foods, especially during the summer months:

•It is colorless, tasteless and cannot be destroyed by cooking or washing

•Even a small amount (1–1.5 grams) can be fatal

Symptoms of Bongkrekic acid poisoning:Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, general weakness and in severe cases can cause shock, result in a coma and even death

5 ways to prevent Bongkrekic acid poisoning

•Wash your hands before handling food

•Use fresh ingredients; do not use spoiled food

•Do not soak food in water for long periods of time, remember to refrigerate

•Cook food thoroughly before eating

•Store leftovers in the refrigerator (at a temperature below 5°C / 41°F)

If symptoms of food poisoning occur,seek immediate medical attention and keep a sample of the suspected food for testing
