Home care tips for dealing with the increased occurrence of “winter itch” among seniors in winter

When the temperature drops during winter, the skin excretes less oil and seniors can suffer from “winter itch.”  in such a situation live-in care workers should pay attention to the following to minimize the discomfort caused to care recipients by scratching itchy skin

•Pay attention to the water temperature when bathing. If the water is too hot it can make the skin even drier.

•Use mild cleaning products in moderation

•After bathing, apply moisturizing lotion or Vaseline to stop the skin losing moisture

If the scratching becomes serious inform your employer the care recipient needs to seek medical treatment and follow the instructions of the dermatologist when taking medication.
